Summary. A summary and overview of all the significant archaeological excavations and discoveries made in and around the Roman town before 1958. 'Roman Colchester' is an essential reference work for Roman Colchester and the starting point for all modern studies and investigations into the town's Roman past. The book describes the town in terms of its insulae and extra-mural cemeteries and buildings prefaced by an overview of Roman Colchester by Mortimer Wheeler. Particularly important sections of the book are the parts dealing with the town walls and the Temple of Claudius.
