Summary. A programme of historic building recording was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust at Boxted Methodist chapel, Chapel Road, Boxted in January 2023. The chapel was originally constructed in the early 19th century and was subsequently extended to the south, to add a vestry, and then the north, to add a porch and gallery. The chapel and extensions are built in three distinct architectural styles. It is the oldest surviving Wesleyan chapel in the borough of Colchester and is locally listed. It represents a good example of a rural non-conformist chapel of the late Georgian period, which evolved to adapt to a growing population. The chapel was used for worship from 1831 until 2019, after which the Boxted parishioners merged with the congregations from Mile end and West Bergholt to worship elsewhere.
