Summary. A programme of historic building recording was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust on a historic barn at Cowlass Hall Farm, Radwinter End, Radwinter in February 2017. The barn lies within the remains of a post-medieval farm complex and is curtilage-listed to Cowlass Hall farmhouse, a 17th-century Grade II listed building (NHLE no. 1217246, EHER 36393). The barn comprises the original 18th-century agricultural structure, two 19th-century extensions and a 19th-century lean-to outbuilding, abutting an early 18th century brick stable block to the south (which is outside the scope of this survey). Although lacking the original roof, the barn remains an example of an Essex threshing barn dating to the 18th century which has characteristics of design not usually found in buildings of this type.
