Summary. The Hope Inn is located in the centre of the historic settlement of Tollesbury. This is the report on an evaluation by three trial-trenches which revealed compact clay layers (almost certainly clay floors) on the High Street frontage. These may be the remains of a late medieval or early post-medieval building (or buildings) cleared from this site when the original Hope Inn was built in the 19th century.
