Summary.
An archaeological evaluation (8 trial-trenches) was carried out at 30a Straight Road, Boxted, Essex in advance of the construction of 23 business units. The site lies in an area in which previous archaeological investigations have uncovered numerous charcoal-rich pits that are the product of a charcoal-production industry that existed here from at least the Early Iron Age to the post-medieval period. It is also located in the midst of a number of cropmark complexes. Excavations here revealed a pit, two gullies or pipe trenches and a posthole, all of which were modern, and two pits and a charcoal-rich pit which could not be dated.
