Summary. An archaeological test-pit evaluation (two test-pits) was carried out at St Nicholas Square, Colchester, Essex in advance of the redevelopment and landscaping of the site. The site is located within the churchyard of St Nicholas Church, which was demolished in 1955. Two inhumation burials, three brick burial vaults and two probable pits containing disarticulated bone were uncovered. Finds of a 19th-20th century date were retrieved from the burial soil, although as the site has been a burial ground since the 12th century it is unclear if these find represent the date of the uncovered burials or are the result of modern disturbance.
