Summary. A programme of archaeological monitoring and excavation (following an evaluation) was carried out at 5 Yorick Road, West Mersea, Essex in advance of the construction of a new dwelling. The site lies in an area rich in archaeological remains dating to the Roman period. Seventeen features were excavated during this stage of investigation, in addition to the six features uncovered during evaluation. Due to the lack of finds, however, most of these features could not be dated. A cluster of postholes, some of which contained Roman material dating, indicated the presence of a posted structure here during this period, while a Roman ditch was also recorded. A ditch which yielded a quantity of Middle Bronze Age pottery during evaluation was excavated further, but only produced one further sherd of late prehistoric pottery.
