Summary.
An archaeological evaluation (five trial-trenches) was carried out on land opposite the Saracen's Head public house, Sudbury Road, Newton, Suffolk in advance of the construction of eight new dwellings and associated infrastructure. The development site
is located among a number of 16th- to 18th-century listed buildings with the line of a Roman road to the west, and a medieval church and post-medieval mill nearby. The evaluation revealed a medieval ditch (11th-12th century) aligned north-east to south-west and extending across the south-eastern end of the site, three modern pits and a modern tree-throw hole.
