Summary. An archaeological evaluation (four trial-trenches) was carried out at Westrope Haulage Yard, Sturmer Road, Birdbrook, Essex in advance of the construction of new offices/light industrial units. Located close to a Roman cemetery, no significant archaeological horizons were exposed in three of the four trenches. The fourth trench contained the partial remains of a Roman clay-lined hearth/oven and a Roman pit. Two Mesolithic flint microliths were also found residually in a Roman feature.
