Summary.
Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out at 5-6 St Nicholas Street and 60 Culver Street East (the former Jacks Store), Colchester in advance of the creation of a café space at ground- floor level with seven one-bedroom residential units. Two very small
test-holes were excavated by the contractors under archaeological supervision. The trial-hole was excavated through 1.1m of modern and post-medieval layers. The borehole was excavated through 320mm of modern layers but none of the subsequent layers but could be accurately dated; natural was recorded at 3.2m below current
ground-level. Medieval pottery from the borehole would suggest that some of the layers are of a medieval date but we cannot be certain which one(s).
