Summary. Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out in Upper Castle Park to the south of Colchester Castle (a Scheduled Monument, NHLE no. 1002217) during groundworks for the relocation of two park benches and the construction of a new access path from Castle Bailey into Castle Park through an existing gate that has been blocked for some time. The site is in an area of the highest archaeological importance, south of the Norman Castle, and south of the Roman Temple of Claudius in insula 22 of the Roman town. No archaeological horizons were identified as groundworks did not penetrate below modern topsoil.
