Summary. An archaeological trial-trenching evaluation was carried out Cannock Mill, Old Heath Road, Colchester, Essex in advance of the construction of a new residential development with associated infrastructure. The current Cannock Mill dates to the mid 19th century and is a Grade II Listed Building (NHLE no 1337742). However, documentary sources record a mill on the site from as early as the 14th century. Despite being located in an area of archaeological significance, only modern features were identified in trenches T1-T7, which were excavated in a field to the south-west of Cannock Mill. Trench T8, next to Cannock Mill, revealed the remains of a timber revetment driven into natural alluvium which may have supported the wall of the waterwheel pit.
