Summary. An archaeological evaluation by test-pitting was carried out in advance of the installation of new lighting to illuminate the Balkerne Gate, Colchester, Essex (Scheduled Monument 1002187). The evaluation was carried out to identify whether significant archaeological horizons had survived at a maximum depth of 300mm below modern ground-level. No archaeological features, layers or finds were identified at this depth and only modern layers were encountered.
