Summary. A programme of historic building recording was carried out by the Colchester Archaeological Trust on 11 Glen Avenue, Colchester, Essex, in September 2015, prior to its demolition. The work was commissioned by the owners, Mr and Mrs N. Badesha. The building is a Neoclassical house and dates to 1827-37, probably the latter end of this date range. It was most likely constructed by the owner, a Colchester land agent called William Downes, from bricks fired in a kiln owned by him and which was located to the north-east of the building. The house has some of the few surviving examples of Gothic Revival windows in Colchester and may also have some very early examples of unhorned sash windows with large plate glass panes. The building was extensively remodelled in the 20th century, with several of the Gothic Revival windows replaced by bespoke metal-framed imitations, possibly commissioned from the Crittall Manufacturing Company.
