Summary.
Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken on the contractor's excavation of two pits for new flagpoles on either side of the entrance bridge to Colchester Castle. The site is in an area of the highest archaeological importance, south of the Norman castle keep, and south of the site of the Roman Temple of Claudius in Insula 22 of the Roman town. The pits revealed post-medieval layers but no significant features, and produced unstratified Roman and post-medieval and finds.
