Summary.
CAT monitored the excavation of foundation trenches for the rebuild of 30 St Clare Road in Colchester, Essex. Included in the scope of the watching brief was the excavation of foundation trenches for a new garage, and the excavation of drain runs and a soakaway.
The foundation trenches were excavated to a depth of around 1m below ground-level through topsoil that had been disturbed by the demolition of the original property, and through a thick deposit of homogeneous sandy silt sealing the natural sand and gravel.
No features of archaeological significance were recorded during the watching brief. No trace of any whole cremation burials and no Roman pottery or cremated bone fragments which might indicate disturbed cremations were recorded. Although one fragment of Roman tile (119g) was recovered from the topsoil, the overall lack of Roman pottery and tile suggests that there were no centres of Roman occupation in the immediate vicinity
