Summary. This site lies on the edge of the historic core of the medieval town of Thaxted. An archaeological evaluation by five trenches revealed two archaeological features and two natural features. The only significant feature was a shallow cut in T1 which may have been either a late medieval ditch adjacent to a postmedieval ditch (a plot boundary?), or a post-medieval cut feature with some residual late medieval material. Medieval potsherds found in residual contexts may indicate some use of this area in the medieval period, possibly for cultivation. There was no evidence of commercial activity or of the manufacture of cutlery.
