Summary.
The application site is an important Lower Palaeolithic site, with evidence of occupation around what was ostensibly a glacial lake. The remains, which are in situ within the brickearth, were discovered in the early 20th century when the site was in use as the 'Valley Brickyard'. They consist of Acheulian flint hand-axes and flakes plus sparse bones of mammoth, deer and ox and a rhinoceros tooth. No definite Neolithic remains have been recorded, but axes of this date are a common find in the surrounding area. A Bronze Age Beaker pot was found during excavations of the Palaeolithic site. It is not known what damage has been caused to the remains by the brickearth quarrying.
